Construction is underway to on a new Maker Library for the region of Fond des Blancs, Haiti. There are very few libraries in Haiti where children can borrow books, surf the internet, and engage in culturally enriching activities. Haiti Projects’ new Maker Library will be all that and more, hosting literacy classes, youth sports clubs, talent petitions, and after-school classes including computer classes, and our Maker spaces where the community can manufacture almost anything.
Our current facility is approximately 1100 square feet, while the new facility would more than double the size, be handicap accessible and serve more of the Fond des Blancs community of 40,000.
Here is what one young man had to say about growing up in Fond des Blancs with the HP Library: “As a child I spent much time at the library. It was open to everyone in the community who wanted to learn to read. We had a cyber cafe where you could use the Internet to research for school projects. On Saturdays, programs for young children were offered and in which we could develop our talents in song, poetry, writing and organized play. The library currently needs computers and many repairs; we hope HP will build a new one.”
Please consider a donation to the Library Fund. All donations to a total of $474,000 are matched by the W.K. Kellogg challenge grant. For more information and to donate, visit our support Haiti Projects page.
