Meet our talented and dedicated Board of Directors:

Jim Tew, Chair
Jim Tew retired in 2003 after 33 years in banking and investment management in Boston. He joined Haiti Projects in 1996, and made his first trip to Fond des Blancs, with Sarah Hackett, in 2004. While in college he competed in the 1964 Olympics (4-oared rowing shell), and after graduation he was in the Navy 1967-70. He and June have 3 children and 5 grandchildren, and live in Rockport, MA.
Kathleen McDonough, Vice Chair
Kathleen McDonough, is President/CEO of Community Health Network (Holliston, MA), which she purchased in 2001 from our Founder, Sarah Hackett. Like Sarah she has a professional background in nursing, public health and home care, and has been involved with Haiti Projects for over 10 years. She will be on the Executive and Finance Committees.
Susan Baldwin, Treasurer
Susan lives and works in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and has been actively involved in public policy for 34 years, 28 of which have been in telecommunications economics, policy and regulation (working for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, for a consulting firm, and, since 2001, as an independent consultant). She advises and testifies on behalf of public sector agencies, consumer advocates, and unions, working on her own and with others. Previously she served on the boards of the Watertown Children’s Theater and the River Valley Charter School, and most recently served as a chair of the RVCS Finance Committee. Susan received her Master of Economics from Boston University, her Master of Public Policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and English from Wellesley College.
Susan M. Gately, Co-Treasurer
Susan M. Gately has been an economic and policy expert specializing in the telecom arena for more than 30 years. Her consulting firm, SMGately Consulting, LLC (SMGC) was founded in January, 2011 and caters primarily to very large users (Fortune 500 Companies) of communications services. Susan lives and works in Pembroke, Mass.
Patricia Chute
Patricia Chute, for the past eleven years, has been a volunteer in Educational Development for the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation and has served on the SBHF Board as well. She has made many trips to Fond des Blancs and looks forward to continuing to serve the community there as a member of the HP Library/Education Committee.
Kenneth Horak
Kenneth Horak spent 20 years in FEMA Region 1 (New England), most recently as Associate Director. His background is in disaster preparedness; he was directly involved in many recovery efforts in the Region as well as post-Katrina and the Northridge Earthquake in California: he was also responsible for oversight of Region 1 anti-terrorist response after 9/11. Ken will work on the Library/Education Committee.
Dale Joachim
Dale Joachim is on the Technical Staff at MIT Lincoln Labs, where he is involved in airport runway optimization. A PhD in Electrical Engineering, he has also been involved in One Laptop per Child, the MIT Media Lab, and numerous other commercial and academic endeavors. He will work on the Library/Education Committee.
Robert Russell
Robert Russell is an MD with background in nutrition, and is currently Professor Emeritus at Tufts Medical School. He has served on the Boards of the USDA Human Investigation Committee, the FDA, National Institute of Health, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He will work on our Clinic Project.
Pierre Vallette
Pierre Valette is currently the Vice President of Content and Communications for Athena health, a leading provider of practice management, electronic health record, and practice management services. Prior to his work at Athena health, Pierre served as the Executive Producer of Children’s Programming for WGBH from 1999-2008 where he Executive Produced Arthur and Postcards from Buster. Pierre worked as Vice President of Quest Productions from 1991-1999 where he contributed to the development and production of a wide range of PBS and network series including the Peabody-winning The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow (PBS) He has also produced numerous medical documentaries including a palliative care video with the Harvard Medical School. For his work in these capacities Pierre has been honored with 4 Emmy Awards, 2 George Foster Peabody Awards, 13 Emmy Nominations, 5 CINE Golden Eagle Awards, a Boston Music Award and the British Academy of Film & Television Award.
Eileen Freitag
Eileen Freitag’s career spans 40 years in home health care, 22 of those at Visiting Nurse Association of Boston. While at the VNA of Boston she rose through operations positions to Vice President of Admissions (marketing) and ultimately, President and CEO. During her tenure as CEO, the agency grew from a $25M home health agency to an $80M multi-corporate home health and hospice agency. Eileen has also served as the CEO of a long term care continuum that included a major home health component, and the Vice President of Business Development of a start-up software company with a communication product for seniors. She now serves as a Partner and the Director of Strategic and Marketing Consulting for Fazzi Associates and works with home health and hospice agencies on a variety of strategic planning, marketing, operations and customer service projects as well as interim management. During her career she has served on the boards of local and national health care organizations. Eileen has an MBA with a concentration in Health Care Management.
Jim Farmer
Jim Farmer is the Instructional Technology Specialist serving 8 school districts at Okefenokee RESA, in Southeast Georgia. He was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1985. He taught and worked as a Technology Integration Specialist for Broward County Schools, the fifth largest school district in the nation. In 2004, Mr. Farmer moved to Waycross Georgia with his wife, also an educator, and three daughters. He taught, coached soccer and cross country and worked at the district office as a Technology Coach in Ware County before becoming the Instructional Technology Specialist at Okefenokee RESA in 2015. Mr. Farmer is an advocate for using technology to engage and inspire all facets of teaching and learning.
